Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday we had a consistent schedule. To begin, we would make a couple house visits with families that ARTSA had been getting to know. At each house we would assist in delivering a food parcel that would last the home a week or two and would sit and chat with the family, see their home, and sing songs together. The South African culture is very musically oriented and so that became one way to get through the language barrier that existed with the older generation. See our House Visits blog for more info...
After house visits, we would go to prepare the feeding program for the kids. Every day we fed approximately 80 kids. For the majority of children, the meal we provided was the only meal they ate that day. The meal consisted of “pop and sauce”, which is a corn based substance that when prepared looks like mashed potatoes, and sauce, which is a very watery gravy made with chicken or beef stock. Yes, we did eat it, and it wasn’t bad! See our Feeding Program blog for more info...
Following the meal we ran an after school event for 11-14 year olds who are in the ARTSA program. Each day was different, and various team members wrote the lesson and scheduled the events for each day. On our day, the last day with the kids, we were able to give out a Bible to each child, read with them our favorite verses, and then had them break into groups to act out parables from the gospels. It was a great time, and we pray that while we aren’t there to explain the words, that the Word of God would speak volumes to their hearts every day. See our After School blog for more info...
